Recently, the Shandong Provincial Department of Science and Technology announced the list of projects for the 2019 Shandong Major Scientific and Technological Innovation Project. The project "Demonstration of High-efficiency Anaerobic Denitrification Technology and Equipment for High-concentration Ammonia Nitrogen Wastewater in Fermentation and Animal Husbandry Industries," led by Shandong Meiquan Environmental Protection Technology Co., Ltd., successfully obtained funding support from the Shandong Major Scientific and Technological Innovation Project after review by district, city, and provincial science and technology departments and experts. The project received nearly 10 million yuan in provincial science and technology project funds.

The project received nearly tens of millions of yuan in provincial science and technology project funds. This project is led by Shandong Meiquan Environmental Protection, with the joint participation of Shandong University, Peking University, China Agricultural University, Sun Yat-sen University, Beijing University of Chemical Technology, University of Hawaii at Manoa, COFCO Biochemical professional company, etc. It has opened up new avenues for environmental protection technology and has received unanimous praise from industry professionals.

At present, the national annual discharge of fermentation wastewater is approximately 600 million tons, livestock and poultry wastewater is approximately 1.8 billion tons, and livestock and poultry manure is as high as 3.8 billion tons. The nitrogen pollution situation is severe, and traditional biological denitrification technology cannot meet the emission standards. Biological denitrification processes urgently need to be upgraded and improved.

Shandong Meiquan Environmental Protection adheres to the principles of: "Achieving total nitrogen emission standards for high-concentration ammonia nitrogen wastewater based on anaerobic ammonium oxidation technology; achieving rapid start-up, high efficiency, and long-term stable operation of anaerobic denitrification processes; and developing special equipment for anaerobic ammonium oxidation processes to achieve intelligent control of reaction equipment." Facing high-concentration ammonia nitrogen wastewater generated by fermentation and animal husbandry industries, we develop anaerobic denitrification processes centered on anaerobic ammonium oxidation technology to improve the total nitrogen removal rate of wastewater; develop special equipment and supporting biological intelligent control systems for anaerobic ammonium oxidation denitrification processes to fill the gap in special equipment for anaerobic denitrification processes; and then comprehensively promote anaerobic ammonium oxidation processes in the fermentation and animal husbandry industries, conduct equipment application demonstrations, and provide model demonstrations and technical support for anaerobic denitrification treatment of high-ammonia nitrogen industrial wastewater nationwide.

Compared with traditional biological denitrification technology, this process saves more than 30% energy consumption and more than 40% sludge reduction. Equipment modularization is achieved in equipment production, which is more conducive to the promotion of equipment technology. It is applied and demonstrated in more than 5 key related enterprises, and in practice, it can achieve "traceable, operable, and observable".

As a major scientific and technological innovation project in Shandong Province, this project can solve the problem of high-concentration ammonia nitrogen wastewater treatment in fermentation and animal husbandry industries, significantly reduce denitrification energy consumption, promote the upgrading of denitrification technology, and enhance China's leading international level in the environmental protection industry. If the technological achievements are promoted and applied in fermentation and animal husbandry enterprises nationwide, it can save approximately 21.6 trillion yuan (9 million yuan/10,000 tons of water) in infrastructure investment and approximately 365.6 billion yuan (1.44 million yuan/10,000 tons of water) in annual operating costs, resulting in significant economic benefits. In addition, if the technological achievements are promoted and applied in fermentation and animal husbandry enterprises nationwide, it can reduce nitrogen emissions by approximately 129.6 billion tons annually, and at the same time reduce greenhouse gas and residual sludge emissions, resulting in significant environmental benefits.
